Some people believe it is in the millisecond range, while others think it takes several seconds to act. In fact, both statements may be correct. What is a resettable fuse?

A resettable fuse is a reusable overcurrent protection device. Under normal operation, its internal resistance is very low, and it has almost no effect on the circuit. When the current exceeds the allowed range, the device heats up rapidly internally, causing the material's resistance to increase sharply, reducing the current to a very low level, thus protecting the downstream circuit.

After fault resolution and temperature returns to normal, it automatically recovers to a low-resistance state, hence it is called "resettable fuse".

 

What is the actual response time of a resettable fuse?

This is the question many people are most concerned about.

 

The answer is simple: There is no fixed time. PPTC belongs to thermally sensitive protective devices.

 

It does not immediately cut off when detecting current, but instead requires:

Current generates heat → Temperature rises → Material undergoes phase change → Resistance increases sharply → Current limiting protection.

 

Therefore, its action time can range from: several milliseconds (ms) to tens of seconds (s).

Factors Affecting Response Time

1. Overcurrent Multiple

The overcurrent multiple is the most significant factor.

 

For example: A model: Ihold = 1A

  • If the actual current is only 2A, it may not trip for dozens of seconds.
  • If the current reaches 5A, it may enter protection within about 100ms.
  • If it reaches above 10A, it may complete current limiting within dozens of milliseconds.

 

Therefore, according to Joule's Law Q=I²Rt, the higher the current, the faster the heat generation per unit time, the faster the temperature rise, and the shorter the response time.

 

2. Ambient Temperature

The higher the ambient temperature, the closer the component is to its operating temperature. Therefore, under the same current, it will act faster in summer than in winter.

 

For example: At 25°C, it may take 500ms.

At 85°C, it may take only 100ms.

Therefore, many electronic component data sheets (Datasheets) provide a Temperature Derating Curve.

 

3. Encapsulation Size

The larger the size: the greater the thermal capacity. Therefore, the response speed is usually slightly slower.

 

For example: The 1206 package usually acts faster than the 2920 package.

However, the 2920 can withstand a higher working current.

Therefore, size and speed need to be balanced comprehensively.

4. PCB Heat Dissipation Capability

If the PCB copper foil area is large, the heat dissipation capability increases, and the PPTC's heating rate decreases.

The result is that the action time becomes longer. Conversely, the smaller the copper foil area, the easier it is to heat up, and the faster the response.

 

5. Differences in Product Material Series

Even with the same packaging, different brands and series have different formulas, leading to differences in thermal expansion rates. Why doesn't a resettable fuse cut off instantly like a traditional fuse?

The reason lies in the completely different protection principles.

Traditional fuses: They cut off via melting of the fuse wire, which is a one-time protection and extremely fast.

PPTC: It is a thermal protection, which requires a certain amount of time to accumulate heat.

Therefore, PPTC is more suitable for continuous overcurrent protection, not for instant high-current impulse protection.

 

If the system requires:

  • µs-level protection
  • ns-level protection
  • ESD protection
  • Lightning protection

It usually requires the use of TVS diodes, ESD protection components, and traditional fuses together.
