Functional Resistors in 0402 Package: A Technical Overview

The 0402 package (imperial, metric 1005, 1.0mm × 0.5mm) is one of the most widely used SMD resistor form factors in high-density PCB designs. Beyond standard thick-film chip resistors, the 0402 package now supports a variety of functional resistor types tailored to specific application requirements. 1. High-Power Resistors

High-power resistors achieve higher rated power within the standard 0402 footprint through optimized ceramic substrate thermal conductivity and specialized resistive paste formulations. Anti-sulfur resistors prevent resistance drift or open-circuit failure caused by sulfur contamination in sulfur-rich environments through optimized electrode materials and protective coatings. 0402 anti-sulfur resistors are available in both thick-film and metal film technologies. 4. Precision Resistors

Precision resistors are manufactured using thin-film technology, offering high accuracy and low temperature coefficients. 0402 precision resistors achieve tolerances as tight as ±0.01% or ±0.1%, with TCR down to ±5ppm/℃ or ±25ppm/℃. Vishay PATT series precision automotive thin-film resistors in 0402 cover 1Ω–1MΩ with noise below -30dB; Viking TAR series tantalum nitride thin-film precision chip resistors offer 0402 size with 10Ω–1MΩ range.

5. Anti-Surge Resistors

Anti-surge resistors feature specialized resistive element designs that withstand high-energy pulse impacts without failure. 6. High-Voltage Resistors

Standard 0402 resistors are rated at 25V–50V, while high-voltage types can reach 100V or higher. HVCR series 0402 high-voltage resistors are rated at 30V; certain high-voltage products in 0402 achieve 100V working voltage. AVX HR series high-resistance resistors offer 0402 package with 2.2MΩ–20MΩ range.

7. Zero-Ohhm Resistors

Zero-ohm resistors (jumpers) function as conductive links in circuits, with resistance typically not exceeding 50mΩ. 0402 zero-ohm resistors are generally rated for currents up to 1A. Vishay CRCW0402 series zero-ohm resistors offer up to 1.5A current capability.
