The NXP battery charger MC34671 chip provides precise charging current and output voltage for 600mA single cell lithium-ion/lithium polymer battery chargers, optimizing the usage time and performance of lithium-ion (Li Ion) and lead-acid batteries. Our battery product portfolio includes sensor ICs, cell controller ICs, and charger ICs, providing excellent performance, precision, and configuration flexibility in the industry.

This series of products includes factory programmable parameters that can improve device flexibility, such as output voltage and input overvoltage protection, constant current (CC) and constant voltage (CV) charging modes, trickle charging current and voltage threshold, EOC current and timeout; Verify filter timing and charging and thermal reversal thresholds.

In addition, our designed switched capacitor charger integrates a switched capacitor converter, OVPFET, and ADC, which can achieve high efficiency, provide multiple protections, and monitor input/output current and voltage.

MC34671 is a cost-effective fully integrated charger suitable for lithium-ion or lithium polymer batteries. It can withstand an input voltage of 28V, eliminating the need for input overvoltage protection circuits in handheld devices. A charging cycle includes three charging modes: trickle, constant current (CC), and constant voltage (CV).   

The constant current (CC) can be set to 600mA through an external resistor. The constant voltage is fixed at 4.2V. When the battery voltage is below the trickle mode threshold, the trickle mode current is pre-set to 20% of the constant current mode current. The end of charge (EOC) current threshold is preset at 10% of the constant current mode current to save board space and cost. When the internal temperature of the IC rises to a preset threshold, the reverse thermal protection function of the charging current will limit the charging current.

MC34671 has a 2.6V power on reset (POR) falling edge threshold, allowing it to work perfectly with current limiting power supplies. Three indicator pins (PPR, CHG, and FAST) can be easily connected to a microprocessor or LED. When the power supply is not connected or disabled, the charger consumes less than 1.0 µ A of battery current.
