Murata Co., Ltd. has expanded its series of PTC thermistors with a size of 0603M (0.6 × 0.3 × 0.3mm) for overheating detection, specifically designed for mobile devices and vehicles. It has also added products with a nominal resistance of 1k Ω and sensing temperatures of 105 ℃ and 115 ℃. This product is scheduled to start mass production from October.

PTC thermistor is an abbreviation for Positive Temperature Coefficient Thermistor. The resistance value of PTC increases sharply after the temperature exceeds a certain temperature, so it can play a role in overheat protection in circuits.

With the high functionality and miniaturization of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, the number of electronic components installed is constantly increasing. In addition, in the 5G environment where communication speed has significantly improved, the amount of information that each component needs to process per unit time has significantly increased, and the high load on the components has led to a surge in heat generation. Therefore, the demand for overheat detection components is increasing.

In addition, in vehicle applications that comply with the AEC-Q200 standard, as the demand for miniaturization of LED sockets increases, there is also a trend towards miniaturization of the internal components used for overheating detection.

In view of this, Murata successfully developed ultra small 0603M size (0.6 × 0.3 × 0.3mm) products with a nominal resistance of 1k Ω series by improving the composition and firing technology of ceramic raw materials. Compared with the old model PRF15 series (1005M size), the volume has been reduced by about 80% and the mounting area has been reduced by about 70%.

In addition, this is the first Pb free product in the Murata PRF series to use lead-free materials, which also helps reduce environmental load.

Main features:

As a specialized 1k Ω series resistor for mobile devices, it achieves an ultra small 0603M size, contributing to high-density mounting and saving circuit board space;

2. PTC thermistor has a small volume and can respond at high speed;

3. Pb free products using lead-free raw materials;

4. Contactless, no interference during opening/closing;

5. Pb free products using lead-free raw materials;

6. No need for complex circuit structures, can reduce the number of components;

After detecting heat, if the temperature returns to normal, it will automatically return to its original resistance value and can be used repeatedly;

8. The resistance value at room temperature (25 ℃) is 1k Ω, and the resistance values at perceived temperatures of 105 ℃ and 115 ℃ are 10k Ω

Thermal management is a crucial technology for ensuring optimal performance of electronic components and preventing damage caused by heat.
